EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
ROXY
CHINA
"Horror Asylum finishes their trilogy
of interviews with the stars of Rip Cage"
It's been a while since my last Rip
Cage interview and whilst lots has been going on behind the
scenes, the project is still very much shrouded in secrecy. I
tracked down my co-star Roxy China to see if she had heard
anything about the project and I have to say she was really
funny.
The fragmented nature of the shoot
meant that I never met any of my co-stars in person, so it was
great to finally have the chance to chat to
Roxy.
Read on to hear about her experiences
on the set of Rip Cage, as well as her crush on Saw
star/creator Leigh Whannel.
How did you get into
acting?
I've wanted to act for as long as I can remember and
like any little girl, I started in school plays (I was Toad in
Toad of Toad Hall). I have been pursuing a professional career
since I was about 15, once I was old enough to realise that if
I wanted it, I had to go out and get it because no-one else
was going to do it for me.
What previous experience have
you had?
Oh wow, like HEAPS! I hate that question because I
never know what to talk about. After finishing high school I
went to NIDA part time and spent a good few years being a
"full-time actor" which is code for "unemployed dole-bludger".
Doing any production I could get my hands on. Most recently I
have been performing at the THEATRE ROYAL (one of the oldest
and most prestigious theatres in Australia) in a Musical
Production called "DRACULA
TRIUMPHANT".
How did you first become
involved with Rip Cage?
I did a documentary with Jacque Vickers, about being
a struggling actor in Sydney. When the role came up she
contacted me to ask if I wanted in and I'm like "hell
yeah!"
What attracted you to the
project?
It's all very mysterious isn't it? I still haven’t
read the full script.
What can you tell us about your
character?
She is called the mysterious woman (ooh spooky) and
she recites poetry...ha-ha - no really though, she is very
compassionate.
How much of the script have you
seen?
Only what we shot in Australia. I’m waiting to watch
the whole film come together.
How long was your part of the
shoot?
It took us only a day to shoot so once it's been
edited it will probably only be the first 5 minutes of the
film.
Did you have to do any of the
green screen stuff?
Nope - not me.
Did you find any particular
aspect challenging?
Not really, except maybe my impatience. I’m really
excited to see the whole film. How long till it's
released!!!?
Have you been surprised by
Lennie's excitement and general enthusiasm about the
project?
I don’t know if I'd say surprised. I just find him
inspirational.
Are you a fan of horror
movies?
I was really into it all when I was little, then in
high school I backed off it a bit and now I think I've found a
balance. I like horror, but now I can enjoy lame romantic
comedies as well. As far as acting goes I want to do it all.
I've realised I'm getting a bit type-cast , with Rip Cage and
Dracula Triumphant both under my belt - I recently auditioned
for a children’s theatre show and had to rack my brain as to
what was appropriate to write on the "previous experience"
question. ha-ha.
What are your thoughts on the
recent trend of Americans going to Australia to make horror
movies, such as the recent House of Wax?
I wish they would bring more! There are not enough
films shooting over here and the acting pool is drying up. I’m
actually praying to the movie gods that Wonder Woman comes to
film here as one of my biggest dreams is to work with Joss
Whedon.
What do you think of Australian
horror
movies?
Dude, we make the best! Have you seen SAW??? How
freaky was THAT. I used to have a crush on Leigh Whannel back
when he was the movie reviewer on this local show. Aussies
actually make the best movies in general. If you have an
Aussie cast and crew with a Hollywood budget you are
guaranteed a brilliant movie cause WE
ROCK!!!
What have you been working on
recently?
You can
catch me in DRACULA TRIUMPHANT at the THEATRE ROYAL in Sydney
Australia and I’m also set to appear in a new musical about
the 70’s called Class of 77.
"Thank you ever so much for taking
part in this interview Roxy.
And we wish you the very best of luck
in the future."
